Elder Protocols and Guidelines – Justice Institute of British Columbia
This document outlines the Elder Protocols and Guidelines at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC). The Elders-In-Residence Program is an integral part of the JIBC and aims to encourage understanding and respect for Indigenous perspectives, cultures, and values. Elders provide guidance, cultural and spiritual support to students, staff, and faculty, and share their knowledge through various cultural activities. The document outlines the process for inviting an Elder, including completing a request form and compensating Elders for their time and expertise. It also provides guidelines for Elder engagement, safety, and availability, and offers contact information for additional assistance. JIBC campuses are located on various Indigenous territories, and it is customary to first invite Elders from the surrounding First Nations or Indigenous groups to participate in activities.
