In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination in B.C. Health Care
This review was led by the Honourable Dr. M.E. Turpel-Lafond (Aki-Kwe) to assess Indigenous specific racism in the British Columbia provincial health care system. It addresses Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination within British Columbia’s healthcare system. It highlights the historical and ongoing prejudice faced by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, leading to negative health impacts and systemic inequities. The report emphasizes the lack of culturally safe practices, insufficient policies, and inadequate accountability measures within the healthcare system. It calls for systemic action to eliminate racism, promote cultural safety, and ensure equitable access to healthcare services for Indigenous peoples, respecting their rights and self-determination, and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
